LITTLE COULD I HAVE GUESSED THAT THE PAINT SCHEME THAT NS CAME UP WITH WOULD BE EVEN WORSE. HAPPILY, THE LEAD UNIT WOULD SEE BRIGHTER DAYS. IN 197, IT WAS PAINTED INTO BRIGHT ECONO RAIL COLORS AND WORKED AT A REFINERY NEAR HOUSTON, TEXAS.

BUT TESTS AT THE CLAYMOUNT 'TEST TRACK' SHOWED THAT THE GG1 HAD MUCH BETTER TRACKING AT SPEED AND SO, THE GG1 PROTOTYPE 4899 WON THE 4800 NUMBER AND THE R1 ENDED UP BEING ONE OF A KIND.
